SWCP - Torbay & East Devon
|From the thriving fishing port of Brixham the path heads through woodland and past lovely beaches to Paignton. From here the route is an easy stretch along the promenades of both Paignton and Torquay. From here on there are views of the rich red Devon sandstone cliffs.
From Torquay harbour the path becomes surprisingly rural and rugged, passing headlands and golden sandy beaches as it heads around to Babbacombe. From here onwards its a twisting path with some tiring ascents and descents as it passes through open fields and woodland before descending to the mouth of the river Teign at Shaldon. After a short ferry ride, its an easy walk along the promenade of Teignmouth.
From Dawlish onwards the route is easy walking along the sea wall and minor roads to reach Starcross, where a short ferry ride will take you across the Exe Estuary to Exmouth. An easy walk along the sea front the path soon changes in variety with woodland, high cliffs and open field walking with a couple of steep ascents before descending into Sidmouth.
Leaving the red cliffs of Sidmouth the path sets off along a rugged stretch of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site with some very steep ascents and descents to overcome before arriving into Seaton. The red sandstone giving way to white chalk cliffs in the area of Beer. Beyond Seaton the path descends into the dense woodland of the Undercliff National Nature reserve and some uneven terrain as the area is formed from landslips, the route then descends into Lyme Regis.
