SWCP - South Devon

Leaving the city of Plymouth behind the path offers views over Plymouth Sound as it heads towards Wembury Point and the Yealm estuary.

Beyond the path offers a mixture of easy high open walking and strenuous climbs and on a clear day views out to the Eddystone lighthouse to arrive in Bigbury-on-Sea and Burgh Island. After crossing the estuary before some fairly easy walking to Thurlestone, where it begins to dip up and down to reach Hope Cove.

From Hope Cove the route can be rugged and difficult at times as it heads out and around Bolt Head and Sharp Tor before arriving into Salcombe. The Path from Salcombe to Torcross is tough but you are rewarded with excellent views. The path crosses high cliffs to Prawle Point and then a rocky, exposed stretch to Start Point and then a more gentle walk along Slapton sands.

Beyond here the route again becomes more challenging as it traverses rugged headlands to reach Dartmouth. From Dartmouth the path climbs through woodland with views over the Dart Estuary before a more challenging section as the path descends and climbs a series of steep valleys before reaching Berry Head and a descent into Brixham.

Note: The River Erme can only be forded at low tide, in view of this we include a taxi around the estuary as standard in the price of your holiday.

The River Avon is crossed by a seasonal ferry operating May to September (Not Sundays).

General Information

The distances and ascents / descents are approximate and for guidance only. The individual making the booking is responsible for ensuring that each member of the party is suitably equipped with standard / survival equipment as necessary for the route / terrain involved.


It is advisable that you and each member of your party, takes out holiday insurance to protect yourselves, equipment, luggage and to cover against non-refundable costs should you have to cancel your trip due to unexpected circumstances or ill health. You should ensure that any such policy covers you for the activities being undertaken during your holiday.


The route is well way-marked and generally easy to follow. We provide a detailed route guide along with maps to assist you along the way.

Experience & Fitness

The tour is suitable for most people with good physical fitness. The route is graded as moderate to strenuous, there are many steep ascents and descents and much of the route is along isolated coastal / cliff top paths.


You should always ensure you are properly equipped for your walking holiday and prepared for varying weather conditions along the route. Your holiday pack contains a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking / survival equipment for a days walking.

Luggage Transfers

Your luggage will be transferred each day between each overnight accommodation as detailed within your itinerary. Please check with your accommodation provider where your bags should be left for collection each morning. Luggage transfers are one bag with a maximum weight of 20kg per person.





We use comfortable hotels, country inns, guest-houses and B&B's in selecting your accommodation and aim to provide these as close to the trail as possible. We work closely with all of our accommodation providers, each one being selected based on their quality of accommodation and the warm welcomes they provide. We will always request accommodation with private en-suite facilities, but in remoter locations this may not always be available. Please note, that due to the route and location of available accommodation you may need to walk / travel a short distance where accommodation is not available along the route (We can provide taxi transfers if required and booked in advance), your holiday pack will contain directions and location map of each nights accommodation.


All of our holidays are provided on a Bed & Breakfast basis, thus giving you the flexibility to choose your own options for lunch and evening meals. Your holiday pack will contain information on the options available along the route to stop for lunch and places to obtain an evening meal locally, along with places to obtain packed lunches. Accommodation providers may be able to offer evening meals and packed lunches by prior arrangement if this should be required.

Single Rooms and Solo Walkers

If you require single room either as an individual or as part of a group we would be happy to accommodate you although a single room supplement is payable.

Additional Nights

You can book as many extra nights as you wish, just tell us during your booking where you would like to spend extra days and we would be happy to arrange this for you and provide a quotation and personalised itinerary for this.
