SWCP - Dorset Coast

A stunning section of the path with amazing scenery and geology as you walk along the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, with rich vegetation, pretty seaside settlements and wild crumbling cliffs.

From Lyme Regis the path heads inland slightly before dropping back to the sea at Charmouth, where the path passes over the cliff tops and spectacular Golden Cap to Seatown. From here there are some short steep climbs before easing as it becomes more level beyond Burton Bradstock, before heading out over the long pebbly sweep of Chesil Beach, before heading slightly inland at Abbotsbury.

Its then a fairly easy walk to Weymouth. For those wishing to follow the entire South West Coast Path there is the optional 13 mile section around the Island of Portland, a dramatic walk with rugged cliffs, hidden coves and its famous lighthouse in an area with quarrying and military presence.

Leaving Weymouth the path becomes much harder along the impressive cliffs with some steep ascents and descents on the way to Lulworth Cove. From Lulworth Cove the path enters an isolated stretch with spectacular views as it roller coasters along the coast before arriving in Swanage. From here the route passes over Ballard Down to Studland, where the final stretch is along sandy beaches to reach South Haven point and the end of the South West Coast Path at the steel sculpture just before the ferry to Sandbanks.

NOTE: The Coast Path passes through the MOD Lulworth Ranges. These are normally open most weekends, public holidays and during most of the summer. We advise you check the range opening times prior to booking, which can be found here.

If you would like to include the Isle of Portland (optional) please make us aware, this will involve an additional days walking (13 miles) and an additional night in Weymouth.
